NOW That’s What I Call Music continúa con sus lanzamientos de Yearbook Vault de temas «menos conocidos» recopilados, echando un vistazo a 1985.
Las colecciones de 4 CD y 3 LP de vinilo de colores profundizan en el panorama musical del año, con 78 temas en las ediciones en CD y 45 canciones repartidas en tres LP de vinilo de color (verde).
El set de 4 CD, que viene en las habituales ediciones de lujo con libro de tapa dura y funda de cartón, comienza con «My Hometown» de Bruce Springsteen, el último sencillo del mega éxito Born in the USA, antes de pasar a Bryan Ferry y Sting con «Windswept» y «Love is the Seventh Wave». Ambas canciones son clásicos de Vault: grandes temas de álbumes clásicos ( Boys and Girls y The Dream of the Blue Turtles, respectivamente) que alcanzaron un éxito mucho menor del que muchos suponen (ninguno entró en el top 40 del Reino Unido). «Eye to Eye» de Go West solo fue un sencillo en EE. UU., mientras que «Be Near Me» de ABC se lanzó a ambos lados del Atlántico, pero tuvo mucho más éxito en Estados Unidos. Este disco continúa con temas de Fine Young Cannibals, China Crisis, Simply Red, Thompson Twins y The Art of Noise.
El segundo disco tiene un toque «alternativo», al menos inicialmente, con canciones de Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain , The Dream Academy y New Model Army, antes de ampliar su repertorio e incluir éxitos menores de artistas como Tina Turner, Matt Bianco, Chris Rea y Squeeze.
El CD3 tiene un enfoque bailable con temas como la brillante «She’s Strange» de Cameo, «In The Evening» de Sheryl Lee Ralph, «The Heaven I Need» de The Three Degrees (producida por Stock Aitken Waterman) y la versión de Divine de «Twisting The Night Away». «Act of War» de Elton John y Millie Jackson es un sencillo de 12 pulgadas muy popular en la feria de discos de Den Bosch (siempre lo veo), pero fue un éxito menor unos años antes de que «Nikita» reviviera la suerte comercial de Reg aquí en el Reino Unido.
El CD 4 tiene el tipo de artistas que encontrarías en una compilación llamada ‘American Highway Dreams’ (Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Kim Carnes, Dio, The Cars, Rick Springfield, etc.), pero como esta es una compilación de Vault, no son todos los grandes éxitos habituales, lo que al menos significa que no es predecible.
